Zed Theater
The Zed Theater building for the Cirque Du Soleil in Tokyo is the first ever dedicated site in Asia.
Cirque Du Soleil was here for a number of years before the theater was built, but the original site in Harajuku was not a permanent position.
The Theater Design
The Exterior
The outside of the theater is designed to reflect the concept of the Cirque Du Soleil - Circus of the Sun.
The roof is constructed of a number of polyhedrons which mean the building can capture as many of the suns rays as possible from all directions. The building as a whole represents a circus tent.
You'll also some rather futuristic looking lighting outside that somehow helps to set the scene as you make your way inside.
The Interior
Walking into the theater you can't help but stop and take in your surroundings. The seats rise in a crescent moon shape around the stage which becomes a focal point as you take your seat to prepare for the show. It's a good idea to get there a little early so you have a chance to sit and wonder what you're going to see.
The Zed Theater stage set is based on a measuring instrument called an astrolabe which was used during the Middle Ages for astrological and astronomical purposes. If you needed to find out when sunrise or sunset would occur on a particular day, or when a comet would streak through the sky, an astrolabe was used to reach the answer.
Look up above the stage and you'll see a huge globe marked with the lines of latitude and meridians. The stage floor shows the phases of the moon and the Milky Way.
The Zed Theater design also has its own "Zed Alpha" or alphabet. The alphabet characters are found dotted around the stage making it a mystical and magical place to enter. A perfect atmosphere to support the show.
