Will The Yurikamome Train Line Run On New Years Eve In Tokyo?

We will visit Tokyo from Dec 25- Jan 1. We will stay in Odaiba and hope to go to the countdown at Zojoji/Tokyo Tower. Will the monorail run after midnight? Also do you have suggestions for dinner that night? (4 people)

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Thanks for your question about the Tokyo train lines - in this case the Yurikamome line - on New Years Eve.

Usually the trains will be available all night on New Years Eve rather than finishing at their regular times. I haven't yet seen any notifications about this for the 2009 event but I'm pretty sure all will run as usual.

If by any chance the Yurikamome line is closed, you should still still be able to get to Odaiba using the JR Rinkai Line. You can get on at Osaki station on the Yamanote Line map.

The countdown at Zozoji and Tokyo Tower is a good choice! You probably already know but New Years Eve is not the big event in Japan that it is in other countries. Most people will spend it at home with their families and/or visit their local temple to say goodbye to the old year and welcome in the new.

Going go Zozoji Temple lets you join in the more traditional aspects of this celebration while the countdown has some of the excitement you might expect at a typical countdown event.

For dinner, if you're staying in Odaiba you're surrounded by some great restaurants that look over Tokyo Bay. If you fancy doing something a little special then why not head over to the Ritz Carlton Tokyo restaurant at Tokyo Midtown?

The food here is excellent (at least IMO) and you'll get some lovely views of the city at night. I would recommend booking in advance if you want to eat at one of the higher end restaurants as they can get booked up quite quickly.

If you want something more down to earth then a visit to a Tokyo izakaya is a great option. There are a couple listed on this page for you but again you'll find these all around Tokyo so there are plenty to choose from!
