Sumo Practice

by Rick Martin
(Tokyo)

If you plan to catch some Japanese sumo wrestling while you're in Japan, you'd better prepare well in advance because tickets can be difficult to snag.

But while a proper sumo tournament can be very expensive to attend, there are occasionally free sumo practices that you can attend.

I managed to get along to one of these practices on April 29. This video will give you an idea of what to expect if you fancy giving this a go. In some respects, it's even better than a tournament!

Which stable was this? Where exactly is this practice session so I can attend? What days of the week can I attend? I will be in Tokyo 6/3 to 6/14.

Hi Les,

I'm sorry to say I don't know which stable this was. The person who submitted the video didn't give that information. But...

Check out this link to a list of sumo stables and the story of how someone else got to watch the sumo practice. I hope it helps : )

I'm pretty sure the wrestler you ID as Kotooshu on the video is in fact Tochinoshin, a Georgian. Kotooshu is about 5-5.5 inches taller than Tochinoshin and the latter has really big legs and hips. Other than that, really cool video!

Thanks for the info! I love sumo but admit that I'm not so familiar with all the wrestlers. I thought it was Kotooshu but am happy to stand corrected. Really appreciate you taking the time to share this info : )

Sumo Practice Tips

This is a great video, especially as it gives some good background info about the different sumo wrestlers you'll actually see if you go to see a tournament.

I had to laugh watching them push the big guy from one side of the ring to the other! I wonder how much he weighs? And how many average Japanese folks it would take to achieve the same feat!

It's also good to know that if you go to one of these practice sessions you will actually get to see the major fighters for a longer time than if you go to the official tournament. I definitely agree that they only fight for a few seconds usually as I've been to several of the Tokyo tournaments.

Great entry!
