Shinagawa River of People Phenomenon

by Stuart Ward
(Tokyo)

Every weekday morning from 8-10am at Shinagawa station in Tokyo, crowds of people on their way to work flow like a river through the corridors of the station. Tokyo business commuters are famous for packing into trains to get to and from work, this video depicts what happens at a major business district when the commuting rush arrives in Shinagawa. This is quite possibly the busiest area in Japan at this time. Music by The MFA, the song is The Difference It Makes (original mix), from James Holden's album, Balance 005. This video was captured on one morning in December 2008.

Akemi That's Crazy!
by: Honor

Wow Akemi- that is an amazing picture! Yes it's the way everything keeps moving in Tokyo that always gets me despite the masses of people flowing in and out.

Thanks for sharing this. Much appreciated : )

rush hour
by: Akemi Akito

I totally agree with Honor. The flow is amazing. If you want to see real crowds you should come to Bucharest (Romania).

That is what I call a crowd. In Tokyo, though there are many people, I never got stuck or wasted hours in waiting. Also the number of people who bump into you is almost none compared to here where it's like 80%...

Rush Hour
by: Derrick

What is true of Shinagawa station, is true about most train stations in Tokyo during "rush hour".
One of the most busiest train stations in the world was Shinjuku.

The clip was excellent and best exemplifies the commuters that pas through that station on a daily basis.

It would make a good MTV video back drop.

Thanks for sharing. A little long though. I couldn't figure out whether clips from the same period of time were being reused. A time reference and half the length would make this a great hit :)

Excellent Capture Of Commuter Life
by: Honor

I love the speeded up pace on this video. It certainly captures the flow of people that pass through and around this station on a regular basis! It always amazes me the number of bodies that are continually on the move and yet there are very few problems or system breakdowns. Excellent submission!
