Odaiba

Odaiba is a pleasure island connected via Rainbow Bridge and train to the mainland of Tokyo. If you want a fun day out, this is a great place to be.

You can shop till you drop, take in a museum, get dizzy on a ferris wheel, indulge in an onsen, drive a Toyota, play games, and sight see your way through the day. It's great!

Odaiba's Statue Of Liberty

A strange and unexpected sight on my first visit here was the lady on the right. It was rather bizarre seeing the Statue of Liberty outside Tokyo Decks shopping center - but there she was.

Apparently, this is a copy, of the French copy, of the original! Sorry for any confusion.

At the end of the 1990's, Japan celebrated it's connections with France by borrowing their Lady of Liberty for a year. She proved so popular that a replica was made (of the copy) once she was returned to her rightful home in France.

Shopping And Leisure

Architects and fans of architecture alike, will love some of the buildings on show in this man-made area of the city. There's a maritime museum shaped like - you guessed it - a ship. There's also Fuji Television building which you can see in the picture to the right.

This incredible design features an orb that seems to hang in thin air connected only by elevated passageways. If you want to you can go up and take a look around. Located on the 25th floor, it's not the tallest venue possible in Tokyo but it will give you a fantastic view of Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay.

If you're lucky you might also catch sight of Mount Fuji depending on the Tokyo weather - best chances are on a clear winter day.

Also on offer is a giant ferris wheel standing at 155 meters tall (or 377 feet depending on your preference).

It takes approximately 16 minutes to complete one rotation and you get great views across Tokyo. Most of the 66 cars are enclosed but if you are feeling particularly daring, there are 4 open cars that let you share your journey with the elements.

Odaiba Pleasure - Onsen Monogatari

Odaiba can also be a place to rest and relax as well as providing an eye to the future.

If you've heard of onsen (hot springs) then be prepared for an onsen with a difference in Odaiba.

The Oedo Onsen Monogatari is a hot spring theme park with the shops and souvenirs to go with your experience.

There are many different baths at the Onsen Monogatari, both indoor and outdoor, as well as hot stone beds and massage services. You could easily spend half a day in here - more if you're a beauty queen.

Just remember to follow onsen etiquette to avoid any social faux pas.

Miraikan - Future Science Museum

In Japanese, "mirai" means future. Once you know that it doesn't take much to figure out that this is a place of the future. Actually it's the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. Personally I prefer the Japanese name Miraikan - much simpler!

It's here you can watch the antics of Honda's famous robot Asimo along with many other futuristic automative technologies.

If you decide to visit here then take note - the planetarium is extremely popular - as soon as you arrive book your ticket to make sure you get a place - they sell out quickly. If you're a fan of science fiction you'll love this museum.
