What is the denomination of Japanese currency? What are the different notes and coins?

Talking about money though, you'll need to plan for when you arrive here so that you have enough cash to carry you through until you can either use an ATM or convert travelers cheques into hard currency.

I'd recommend arriving with enough money to last a couple of days so you don't have to worry about getting straight to a cash machine when you're tired and just trying to get your bearings.

Japan is a little different to other places you'll travel. It's so advanced in many ways but the banking system is still kind of archaic. You can only use international credit cards in a few places. For more information see our Tokyo Banks page.
