Japan Summer Twitter Oneliners
You Know Summer's Coming To Japan When...
Why a Japan summer twitter article?
A couple of weeks ago I tried a little Twitter experiment to see if anyone would be interested in joining in. The result was amazing and resulted in our first Tokyo Twitter article. It was a lot of fun so... we thought we'd try for a part 2.
Japan Summer Twitter Fun!
A Japan summer twitter oneliner to make you smile.
The seasons play a major part in Japanese culture and there are festivals, weather and activities that define exactly where you are on the annual calendar. Summer is no exception and it has characteristics all of its own.
We wondered what the response would be to, "You know summer's coming to Japan when...". What would be the first thing that came to mind? There are some great answers as well as some excellent tips about things to prepare for if you're visiting Tokyo or other areas of Japan during its hottest months.
Remember to visit the Tweeple who responded - they are all good people to follow for Japan related information!
For the sake of being simple, responses are presented in the order they were received.

"...when your newspaper wilts instead of folds".
Heh heh. Very true. I can feel the humidity rising already!
@sandrajapandra said:
"...when this lady starts sniffing around again: Sniff sniff".
The train going home can be pretty awful if its been a hot day! Definitely time to avoid the rush hour.
@TokyoWriter said:
"...when the gaijin wear shorts on the trains, but the Japanese wear pants and coats".
How on earth can anyone wear them without passing out from heat stroke?
@scion_cho said:
"...when it's easier to wake up in the morning as the sun shines so early".
Oh I agree with this Japan summer twitter! The mornings are lovely, especially early on before the humidity really kicks in.
@InvisibleGaijin said:
...when you start sweating IN the shower.
I feel the pain of this one : ) I turn my shower down to cold in the hope that it will keep me cool enough so that I can dry off and get my clothes on before I start the daily moisture build up!
@InvisibleGaijin said:
...when your favorite meal becomes cold beer and edamame.
That first cold sip is lovely at the end of a hot day! Edamame I like at any time of year but in the summer it tends to become the whole meal rather than just side dish : )
@InvisibleGaijin said:
...when you go to Shonan beach to meet 15 million of your best friends.
Beaches, especially the popular ones, are crowded, no let's change that to packed, during the hotter months. Take note of this Japan summer twitter tip. You've been warned.
@InvisibleGaijin said:
...when your morning commute starts smelling of futsuka-yoi (hangover) AND rancid sweat.
Yes, the stale beer smells are a regular feature at any time of year, but the delicate fragrance of some well-worn body odour just gives it that extra je ne said quoi!
@InvisibleGaijin said:
...when guys start wondering where they left that "buns of steel" DVD.
The vanity call of summer. An international and gender free pastime I believe : )
@InvisibleGaijin said:
...when young women start showing more skin only to attract attention from middle-aged men.
I have no idea how to respond to this one! I'll be in trouble either way. Thou shalt fight and stand alone InvisibleGaijin. Ah.... of course, the invisible thing. Smart protection.

...when you start hearing the noisy cicadas. Yes, they are annoying.
And when you have a tree right outside your bedroom window sleep becomes a fond memory.
@kylehase said:
...when more people are holding hankachi than keitai.
Hankachi are the small towels most Japanese people are wise enough to carry with them during the hotter months. Stow it in a handbag or briefcase and you can at least wipe the sweat away on something other than your sleeve!
@kylehase said:
...when semi (蝉) wake you long before your alarm clock.
Semi is the Japanese name for cicadas. Yup. They'll stop you going to sleep and then, when you finally nod off, they'll be waking you up again before you know it.
@pukupi said:
...when your soba is served cold.
This is a great Japan summer twitter dish on a hot day. It comes highly recommended.
@hp88 said:
...when the lapdogs are in sunglasses, shorts and tees.
I've even seen one wearing a sombrero. I don't get this whole dressing up your dog thing.
@pukupi said:
...when various parts of your body start to rot (o_o).
Don't forget to bring your athletes foot powder!
@kylehase said:
...when salarymen trade in the jackets and ties for half sleeves.
Cool biz is definitely getting more popular although most men still wear their ties.
@spamfromjapan said:
...when they start advertising films that your friends in America saw last month..
Frustrating - especially when you get all the reviews before you get the chance to watch.
@spamfromjapan said:
...when the butterflies are bigger than the crows.
You're talking about the big black ones that freak me out when they decide to hover around you. I love butterflies but these ones are kind of sinister. Japan summer twitter fear!
@drebes said:
...when you're awakened by the powerful sound of cicadas.
The electric techno insects with dance beat all of their own. Wish I could share their wavelength!
@avocado said:
You can't tell when summer has arrived, because people are still wearing their winter clothes!.
This is one of those strange but true things. You'll still see those leggings and woolly hats even when the thermometers are touching reaching 35.
@muzachan said:
...when you always carry a bottle of drink with you.
This is a really good Japan summer twitter tip from Muzachan, especially if you're not used to the heat. Make sure you have some liquid with you to avoid dehydration.
@ShaneSakata said:
...when you step out for a brief errand and need a shower and a change of clothes when you get back - it's that hot and humid!
Oh I know this feeling. All you want to do is jump in the shower!
@danisidhe said:
Brief errand? Try when you need a shower because you've stepped out the door! Lol.
Danisidhe added to Shane's comment and I had to chuckle. Yes there are days when you're ready to turn back before you even get out of the door.
@barryintokyo said:
...when posters for rooftop beer gardens start going up!
The rooftop beer gardens are a great Japan summer twitter tip! These are one of the best things about summer. Escape the heat and chill out with some great views over the city.
@isaberabera said:
...when you actually don't mind paying for a cab ride cause the air is getting too thick for you to even want to keep walking.
Yes the heat can be draining and there are times when you just say "I give up"!
@semisara said:
...when the obasan put on their long black gloves and Darth Vader hats to ride their bikes.
Hee : ) It does look funny when they're cycling towards you. That is until you realize they're not really in control!
@spamfromjapan said:
...when convenience stores are stacked with beer and magazines dedicated to firework displays.
One of the best things about summer! Make sure you get along to one of these if you're in Japan during July and August. It's an awesome sight : )
Every so often we'll throw out one of these oneliner teasers for fun and if we get enough interest and responses we'll make sure to create an article with a link back to you! If you wanted to join in make sure you're following TokyoTopia.
A big thanks again to everyone who participated in our Japan summer twitter campaign. Some hilarious answers here : )
